Like a hot toddy for the melancholy, Picco’s voice could ease a hard winter’s rust from your ’92 Pinto. So personable under the stage lights you can’t understand where his writing got that bleeding edge. Patience punctuates each chord, lyric and chorus. Nice guys finish first but leave you wanting more.
Picco’s 2007 release is a thread of songs created over a sojourn in the US and Canada, now released from an intimate Newfoundland studio. “Finally the music is strong enough to take me to where I want to be” says Picco. Ironically it drew a poet home.
Talking tunes with Ron Sexsmith, collaborating with Ron Hynes, a successful 2005 Atlantic Tour alongside Australian artist Jimmy Dowling and gigging relentlessly shaped the new project. Now Picco’s voice is permeating every dark corner of St. John’s with prowess. Clearly he’s lived it.
A Gould’s guy who pays rent in Toronto and St. John’s; he was cast to the stage through bad behaviour. Thrown out of art he ended up in music class with a guitar in hand through every fault of his own. Cue fog.
Ten years progressed Chris from Dylan covers to Humber College in Toronto where (antics in-check), he strode out with an Honours Diploma in Jazz Performance. Pining for more road, more music and more muse he beat a wide road to the launch of his EP released in 2005 (Toronto/St. John’s). The EP had critical acclaim and rotation on The Coast, VOCM, CHMR and CBC Radio in Newfoundland as well as CBC Toronto and campus stations across the nation.
Produced by Jesse Laine and mixed by Paul Benedict (Ronnie Hawkins, Rita Chiarelli Juno nominated Blues CD of the year 2005), Picco was a 2005 Nominated Country Artist with The Music Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The sequel will be released in spring 2007 featuring Picco’s originals, his savory sound and a labyrinth of human condition; a Renaissance songwriter, singer and band leader for seasons to come.
