Don’t the years go by fast but the week days ever so slowly?
The infamous and pretty famous indie NL band ‘Gearbox’, called it a good run after eleven years, 572 Monday nights and 12,000+ records sold in 2005. This would leave former lead man Kalem Mahoney, with ample time to catch up on his laundry, polish a guitar or two and write songs. There was no ‘on-stage-fist-fight’, no big climatic parting issue…it was just over.
“Playing was what I knew…we use to get our parents to write notes to let us play in the bars…we were only 16 when Gearbox started…it was my entire adult life.”
For awhile being home was novel but discover you’ve written a year’s worth of material (52 Mondays); you know it has to go somewhere.
Enter three new men; Elliot Dicks, Mark Neary and Justin Merdsoy. Originally they gathered to give Mahoney’s songs some legs, work out the arrangements and demo stuff. Every Monday night for five weeks they practiced original tunes and many Mondays and tunes became THE MONDAY NIGHTS.
Mark Neary and Elliot Dicks are the rhythm section for both The Monday Nights and The Novaks. The latter were formed in 2003 and have released a CD to critical acclaim. They are signed with SONIC/WARNER RECORDS CANADA, working with Sonic Entertainment Group out of Halifax to round out the management team.
Justin Merdsoy has played on and produced several records in his native province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Since their formation in 2006 the group has toured successfully through Newfoundland and Labrador but let’s not forget they all have a few miles under their collective leather jackets from past bands and musical projects.
Mahoney, Neary and Merdsoy all have producer credits and Mahoney is known for co-penning the hit “Shines Right Through” with Great Big Sea (released widely on Warner Records and three separate compilations). Having already toured continental Europe, Canada and the US plus collecting several MUSIC NL industry awards, nomination and some East Coast Music award hardware in past individually, what is next you ask?
The weekend is over ... here come THE MONDAY NIGHTS.
